Introduction to Oncology

This is a one day training.

This course is an introduction to oncology.   An detailed overview will be given of:

  • CORNER STONES of ONCOLOGY - History,  Prior cancer treatments, Vital functions, Histopathological assessment, Grading, Staging
  • CANCER SYMPTOMS
  • DIAGNOSIS
  • HISTORY TAKING & PHYSICAL EXAMINATION
  • DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING STUDIES (X-rays; CT scans; radionuclide bone scans, MRI, Ultrasound, ...)
  • LABORATORY TESTS
  • BIOPSY 
  • CLINICAL EVALUATION OF THE PATIENT AND THEIR TUMOUR (prognosis, treatment, staging, grading and typology of cancer) 
  • TREATMENT PRINCIPLES IN CANCER (treatment goals, treatment philosophy, therapeutic options)

 This course can be followed by additional training focusing on specific therapeutic fields

Learning Objectives

This training will give you a very extended introduction to the oncological therapeutic area.  

Besides a clear overview of the history, symptoms, diagnosis, ... and current treatment options, a clear overview will be given of the ongoing clinical research activities and thus future treatments options.

Catering: There will be morning and afternoon refreshment breaks, a (sandwich) lunch will also be provided.
Course material: Presentation handouts and supporting documents will be provided. All course material will be in English.
